Community of Tembisa appreciates courtesy visits to place of entertainment by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner

Details Media Statement South African Police Service Office of the Provincial Commissioner Gauteng PARKTOWN - Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, on Sunday 15 December 2019, led the safer festive season operations in Tembisa in Ekurhuleni. Inspections for compliance were conducted at a number of entertainment establishments and police shut down eight (8) outlets for non-compliance, confiscated volumes of alcohol, and issued fines amounting to over R12 000 in an effort to bring down liquor generated crimes known to spike seasonally. Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, doing things differently in response to Police Minister, General Bheki Cele's call to turn the tide against crime, paid visits to a number of popular places of entertainment in Tembisa, where the Commissioner and Senior Managers accompanying him were welcomed after initial doubt by the patrons at the respective establishments. General Mawela interacted with and assured the patrons of Slotjhile, Zaka Lifestyle, and Busy Corner that police were committed to strengthening relations with the public. The Provincial Commissioner also shared festive season safety tips, cautioning patrons against the irresponsible consumption of alcohol, as well as against drinking and driving. At the same time, the Provincial Commissioner also commended the owners/managers of all three establishments for being fully compliant. In the meantime, different types of drugs were confiscated during parallel intelligence-led operations in Tembisa where four (4) suspects were arrested for possession of and dealing in drugs. Roadblocks were also mounted at strategic points where police checked for stolen vehicles as well as for general road safety. Traffic fines were issued to more than 20 drivers while about 25 were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Detectives were also able to successfully trace and arrest 17 suspects wanted for various crimes including assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of stolen motor vehicle, and malicious damage to property. The operations continued this morning (Monday, 16 December 2019) in other Districts in the Province towards ensuring that the long weekend is rounded up with minimum reported incidents.
